We find it helpful to assess M&A activity within the context of themes.  One of the most influential themes at work today is the ascendancy of marketing and advertising.  Google proved that integrating the traditional media revenue model as a way to monetize their search service (software offered as a service (SaaS) was very lucrative.  Fred Wilson, a fresh thinking venture capitalist with Union Square Ventures, captures the shift of thinking that is at the essence of the current theme in his recent post Software is Media.
